Obituary of Leonard L. Coats, Jr.

Memorial services for Leonard L. Coats, Jr., age 82, of Wedowee will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2015, at 2:00 PM from Benefield Funeral Chapel with Rev. Bobby Burroughs officiating. Mr. Coats passed away Sunday, September 20, 2015, at Noland Hospital in Anniston. Survivors include his wife, Nobia Coats of Wedowee; two daughters, Cheryl Bovyn of Boilingbrook, IL, and Jessie Darby of Woodland; four sons, Richard Coats of Douglasville, GA, Leonard L. Coats, III, of Wedowee, Jimmy Mims of Woodland, and Richard Mims of Boilingbrook, IL; ten grandchildren, Shelly Mitchell, Amy Coats, Lisa Clark, Angie Hawthorne, David Bovyn, Jerimey Mims, James Mims III, Nicole Mims, Eric Mims, and Donna Smith; ten great-grandchildren; one sister, Jodi of Atlanta, GA; and one brother, Lamar Coats of Rockmart, GA. A Rockmart, Georgia native, Mr. Coats was born on January 11, 1933, the son of Leonard L. Coats, Sr., and Inola Alsabrook Coats. He was a US Army Veteran of the Korean War, a retired union rep for General Motors, and owner of Coats Mainstreet Gun Shop. Mr. Coats was Baptist by faith and was a member of the Masons, Glenwood Hill Lodge, Atlanta, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Betty Coats; ten brothers and sisters; and his mother and father-in-law, Payton and Jessie Haygood.
