Please share a memory of Sarah to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Born in Randolph County on July 14, 1929, Mrs. McKay was the daughter of Ila Pearl Bassett Dobson and Chink Bruce Dobson. She was the granddaughter of Ludie Jackson Dobson and William Washington Dobson, and Josephine Sherrer Bassett and Thomas Jefferson Bassett. Mrs. McKay is survived by her husband of 64 years, Jack McKay; two children, son Gregory Jack McKay (wife, Kate) and daughter Teresa Jill McKay Battles (husband, Jim); grandchildren Jack Edward and Coco McKay, Tyler, Ben and Jolee Battles, Brandon McKay, and two step-grandchildren, Sara Beth and Tyler Posten (wife, Laura). She is also survived by three sisters Carolyn Faye Dobson Brooks (husband, Buford) of Jacksonville, AL; Ludie Jo Dobson Kicker (husband, Robert) of Wedowee, AL and Judy Beth Dobson Roberts (husband, William F.) of Fayetteville, GA; special aunt Mary Sue Pike of Roanoke, AL and many nieces and nephews of whom she was very fond and many good friends. In addition to her parents and grandparents, Mrs. McKay was preceded in death by one son Christopher Bruce McKay. Mrs. Mckay graduated from Handley High School in Roanoke, AL and Dekalb Community College in Clarkston, GA. For many years she was Assistant to the Principal of Chapel Hill Middle School in Douglasville, GA and retired from the Douglas County School System. Mrs. Mckay loved teaching the Ladies’ Sunday School class and taught for more than fifty years at First Baptist Church of Douglasville as well as First Baptist Church of Wedowee. She was an eager and accomplished bridge player and had belonged to several bridge clubs, one of which was a partners club that both she and her husband enjoyed. They also liked to dance, that being a part of their early courtship, and could be seen on the dance floor whenever the opportunity presented. Community involvement was an enjoyable part of her life, from assisting Jack with projects and events in his role as County Commissioner of Douglas County to her own interests in being a member of the Wedowee Garden Club, Magazine Club of Roanoke, Luncheon Club of Douglas County, and the Wedowee Hospital Auxiliary. Her kindness and care of others and her great sense of humor will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Arrangements are through Benefield Funeral Home in Wedowee, AL. Visitation with the family will be held there on Friday, November 27th from 5:00 – 7:00pm. Services will be Saturday, November 28th at 10:00am at the First Baptist Church of Wedowee officiated by Rev. Woodrow Hudson, Dr. John Pennington, and Rev. Don Ellison. Pallbearers are her 4 grandsons; Tyler and Ben Battles, Jack Edward McKay, and Brandon McKay; step grandson, Tyler Posten, and family friend, Trevor Nicholson.
