Obituary of Greg East

Funeral services for Greg “Poppy G” East, age 52, of Woodland will be held on Wednesday, August 3, 2016, at 1:00 PM at Harmony Congregational Methodist Church with Rev. Jerry Wiggins, Rev. Chad Brown, Rev. Jason Owens, and Rev. Ed Halsey officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4:30-8:30 PM on Tuesday, August 2, 2016. Greg celebrated his home going on Sunday, July 31, 2016, at UAB Hospital surrounded by his family. Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Jerolene East of Wedowee; two daughters, Nicole Gowens (husband, Josh) and Noelle McCain (husband, Colton), both of Woodland; four grandchildren, Paxton Gowens, Parker Gowens, Pazlyn Gowens, and Lydia McCain; his parents, Larry and Elaine East of Bowdon, GA and Agatha and Hoyt Gay of Bowdon, GA; one sister, Shelia Ring (husband, Kyle) of Lowell, GA; one brother, Michael East of Ranburne; nieces and nephews, Amanda, Kelli, Shelbi, Danica, Zoe, and Tylar. Pallbearers will be Tony Richardson, Quinton Blanks, Dan Huddleston, Clayton Akins, Mike Strunk, Stanley Allen, Wayne Akins, and Nathaniel Morrow. Honorary pallbearers will be all Fireman, Colton Thompson, C.J. Burk, and all tire company personnel. Greg was born on September 25, 1963, in Carrollton, Georgia, to Larry B. East and Agatha Akins Gay. He was a member and deacon at Harmony Congregational Methodist Church, owner of Affordable Tire and Repair in Woodland, Chief of Newell Volunteer Fire Department, and served on the Board of Directors for the Alabama Tire Dealer Association. Greg was preceded in death by many beloved grandparents, aunts, and uncles.
