Sam Carpenter Obituary

Funeral services for Samuel William Carpenter, Jr., 90, of Wedowee, will be held on Monday, February 6, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Roanoke Church of Christ with Lin Turner, Corey Carpenter, and Bro. Gerald Romine officiating.  Burial will follow at Wedowee City Cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.


The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3:00-8:00 PM on Sunday, February 5, 2023.  Mr. Carpenter will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services beginning on Monday.


Mr. Carpenter passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, February 3, 2023, surrounded by his family.


Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Mary Bramlett Carpenter of Wedowee; four daughters, Amy Carpenter Lyles of Wedowee, Mona Carpenter VanDyke of Nashville, TN, Sheila Carpenter Haney of Hokes Bluff, AL, and Tracy Faulkner Carpenter of Wedowee; one son, Jason Matthew Carpenter (Leslie) of Sparta, TN; 13 grandchildren, Casey Carpenter (Bekah), Corey Carpenter, Austin Carpenter (Taylor), Ashley Lyles Entrekin (Evan), Hunter Michael Lyles (Allison), Colton Samuel Lyles, Ava Catherine VanDyke, Abby Haney, Jack Carpenter, Saydee Carpenter, Sam Carpenter, Jase Carpenter, and Lincoln Carpenter; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Sue Andrews of Brewton and Joyce Davis of Wedowee.


Pallbearers will be Colton Lyles, Hunter Lyles, Evan Entrekin, Casey Carpenter, Corey Carpenter, Jack Carpenter, Sam Carpenter, and Jase Carpenter.


A Wedowee native, Mr. Carpenter was born on February 26, 1932, the son of Samuel William Carpenter, Sr., and Effie Washington Carpenter.  He graduated from Randolph County High School in 1949, went to API (now Auburn University) where he graduated in 1954, and immediately served three years in the United States Air Force in Okinawa.  After returning to Wedowee, Mr. Carpenter served as the Wedowee Postmaster for about two years before going to work at the Bank of Wedowee.  He began his career at the bank in 1959, became President of the bank in 1969, and retired in that position in the year 2000.  He also worked on the family farm during all of these years.  Mr. Carpenter was a member of the Roanoke Church of Christ and his primary focus was missions work in many different countries.  He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Glenn Carpenter; and sisters, Louise, Mildred, Ione, Mozelle, Ermis, Sara, and Ruth.


Memorials may be floral or donations made in Mr. Carpenter’s memory may be sent to the Weathers Heights Mission Fund c/o First Bank of Alabama in Wedowee or Compassus Hospice at 4455 Highway 431, Roanoke, AL 36274.
