Stephen Robert Thompson Obituary

Stephen Robert Thompson was born February 24, 1948, in Rome, New York, to Harold Francis Thompson and Mary Jane Richards Thompson. He grew up in Rome, New York, graduating from Rome Free Academy. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1968 to 1988, earning the rank of Master Sergeant. After his military retirement, he moved to Alabama. Employed by Boeing, Steve worked on projects such as the International Space Station, with his dedication earning him a prestigious Silver Snoopy Award.


Steve loved his family, his dogs, golfing, fishing, watching all kinds of football, the Marine Corps, Mickey Mouse and all things Disney.


Steve passed away November 21, 2025, in Decatur, AL. He is survived by the love of his life - his dedicated wife of 33 years, Judy Wortham Thompson of Decatur, daughter Michelle Wallace of Decatur, daughter Jessica Tidwell (fiancé Daniel Smith) of Roanoke, AL, his favorite granddaughter Sandi Taylor of Decatur, his favorite grandson Tanner Tidwell of Roanoke, two brothers Mike Thompson (Sandie Pierce) and Gordon Thomspon (Cindy), one sister Mary Fay (Mick), sister-in-law Debra Thompson, a host of nieces and nephews, and his two beloved dachshunds - Winston and Randolph. He was preceded in death by one brother John Thompson, and his parents.


Visitation will be Tuesday, November 25 from 5pm to 8pm, at Benefield Funeral Home in Wedowee.


Services will be Wednesday, November 26 at 11am at Benefield Funeral Home with interment to follow at Wortham Family Cemetery (Pineywoods Church of Christ Cemetery) in Wedowee.


Pallbearers will be Sandi Taylor, Jeffrey Kitchens, Jason Kitchens, Daniel Smith, Wortham Bailey, and Roy Doug Benefield.
