Funeral services for Pastor Verlon Darwin Houston, age 61, of Heflin, will be held on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Benefield Funeral Chapel with Bro. Mark Phillips officiating.  Burial will follow at Rocky Mount Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4:00-6:00 PM on Saturday, December 20, 2025.

Mr. Houston passed away on Thursday, December 18, 2025, at Regional Medical Center in Anniston.

Survivors include: two daughters, Arminta Person (Ronnie) of Heflin and Bianca Martin (Josey) of Anniston; one son, Martello Houston of North Carolina; ten grandchildren; and his mother, Erris Houston.

A Heflin native, Mr. Houston was born on June 20, 1964, the son of James Franklin and Erris Westbrook Houston. He was the former pastor of Grants Chapel AME in Calera, Alabama, and worked as a truck driver. Mr. Houston was preceded in death by his father and his wife, Sharon Denise Houston.
