Please share a memory of Kathryn to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Kathryn Jones Lumpkin, age 91, of Rome, GA and formerly of Wedowee, Alabama, passed away on Friday, January 11. Mrs. Lumpkin was born in Wehadkee, Alabama, on October 28, 1921, to the late Edith Green Jones and Thomas Valentine (T.V.) Jones. She spent her entire life, except for the last eight years, in Randolph County, Alabama. Kathryn graduated with undergraduate and graduate degrees from her beloved Auburn University. While at Auburn, she was an active member of Chi Omega Sorority. One of the highlights of her life was the honor of being chosen the 1942 May Day Queen. In the hearts of her family, she will always be the May Day Queen. On November 21,1943, Kathryn married the great love of her life, fellow Auburn graduate, William Clifford Lumpkin, Jr., of Tuskegee, Alabama. After the end of World War II, Kathryn and Lump settled in Wedowee where they raised their two sons, Tom and Bill. Kathryn was the consummate homemaker while Lump was active in civic and service organizations. After 47 years of marriage, Kathryn was preceded in death by Lump in 1991. Prior to her marriage, Kathryn was employed by Alabama Power as a home economist. Later when her youngest child entered first grade, Kathryn returned to work as a vocational home economics teacher at Randolph County High School. She continued in this position for 17 years often working with student teachers from Auburn University. She delighted in being a mentor to former students as they became homemakers and professionals. Prior to moving to Rome, Kathryn was an active member and trustee of First Baptist Church, Wedowee, Alabama. She served on numerous committees in her church and was an active member of the W.M.U. She was a member of The Music Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, and a charter member of the Wedowee Study Club. She was an active member of the Auburn Alumni Association and was honored to have received the Golden Tiger Award. Kathryn entertained beautifully and with grace. She loved opening her home for social, civic, and church events. Kathryn is survived by two sons and their wives: Mr. and Mrs. William Clifford Lumpkin, III, (Bill and Christin) of Kingwood, Texas, and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Jones Lumpkin (Diane and Tom), of Rome, Georgia. Three grandchildren also survive: Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie (Ellen Lumpkin) Greer and Mr. Thomas Jay Lumpkin of Rome, Georgia, and Mr. William Christopher Lumpkin, of Kingwood, Texas. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, January 15, at 2:00 p.m., Central Standard Time at the First Baptist Church of Wedowee. Friends will be received from noon until the time of service. Pallbearers will be Tommy Camp, John Coe, Tim Coe, Dick Israel, James Kendricks, and Rob Perry. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made in memory of Kathryn to the First Baptist Church of Wedowee, Alabama, The Music Ministry of First Baptist Church of Rome, Georgia, or the Salvation Army. The family would like to thank the staff of Horizon Bay and the staff of The Harbor at the Renaissance, for their dedication and loving care that allowed our mother to live a life filled with dignity and purpose.
