Funeral services for Sherman Whitmore, Sr., age 87, of Woodland will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. from Providence Baptist Church with Rev. Ridley Herren, Rev. Tony Morris, Bro. Gerald Romine, and Rev. David Daniel officiating. Burial will follow at Providence Baptist Cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 16, 2013. Mr. Whitmore will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday. Mr. Whitmore died Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at his residence. Survivors include: two sons, Junior Whitmore and Chad (Dawn) Whitmore, both of Woodland; grandchildren, Benji and Betsy Whitmore; and two sisters, Elizabeth Stewart of LaGrange, GA, and Rachel Bethea of Opelika. Pallbearers will be Paul Saxon, Deacons of Providence Baptist, Thomas Green, Jeff Thompson, Allen Cantrell, Gerald McCord, J.R. Fincher, Chuck Smith, and Wendell Ford. Honorary pallbearers will be Ray Moody, Joe Wortham, Steve Cantrell, Rodney Lum, and Rusty Arrington. A Randolph County native, Mr. Whitmore was born on April 23, 1926, the son of Harvey Vester and Pearl Buchannan Whitmore. He was a World War II Army veteran, a member of Providence Baptist Church, and the owner of Whitmore's Electrical & Plumbing in Woodland. Mr. Whitmore was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jewell Douglas Whitmore; five sisters and seven brothers. Memorials may be floral or the family suggests donations to the Providence Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
