Charles Douglas "Doug" Boone, 92, passed on Sunday, October 27, 2013, at Ava Hills Assisted Living. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at First United Methodist Church of Wedowee, with Rev. Russell Hestley officiating. Burial will follow in the Wedowee City Cemetery. Mr. Boone is survived by two daughters, Nancy (husband the late Jay) Wilkinson and Susan (and husband David) Jenkins, both of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; one son, Charles (and wife Brenda) Boone, of Wedowee; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be C. Daniel Boone, Glenn Wilkinson, Joseph Rispoli, Jay Stone, Lamar Payne and Tim Coe. Mr. Boone was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marjorie Traylor Boone, three sisters Lucille Howell, Runette Dobson and Mary Faye Culberson, and four brothers Terrell, Carlos, Dan and Kermit Boone. Mr. Boone was a native of Randolph County, born on February 2, 1921, the son of Joseph Edward and Mary Hill Boone. He was a 1939 graduate of Randolph County High School and a 1948 graduate of Auburn University. He had retired from Western Electric as a mechanical engineer, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Wedowee. Mr. Boone was a World War II veteran (the greatest generation), having served in the European Theatre in the 305th Bomb Group of the U.S. 8th Army Air Corps. He was a founding member of the 8th Air Force Museum in Pooler, Georgia, and was a member of the Piedmont Pioneer Masonic Lodge #685 of F&AM. The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home on Monday, October 28, 2013 from 5 until 8 PM. The family will accept flowers or, in lieu thereof, donations may be made to the Mighty 8th Air Force Museum, 175 Bourne Avenue, Pooler, GA 31322, or to the Building Fund of First United Methodist Church of Wedowee.
