Obituary of Vernon Eugene Vowell

Funeral services for Rev. Vernon Eugene Vowell, age 59, of Wedowee will be held on Sunday, June 22, 2014, at 2:00 PM from Mt. Grove Baptist Church with Revs. Larry McDaniel, James Lee, Donald Spradlin, and Bro. Josh Holloway officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00-8:00 PM on Saturday, June, 21, 2014. Rev. Vowell will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services beginning on Sunday. Rev. Vowell passed away Thursday, June 19, 2014, at Wedowee Hospital. Survivors include his wife, Elaine Akins Vowell of Wedowee; two daughters, Silena Hickman and Regina Fincher, both of Wedowee; one son, Waylon Vowell of Wedowee; 12 grandchildren; nine sisters, Linda Bolt of Wedowee, Dorothy Hunt of Newell, Sandra Brown of Wedowee, Lottie Key of Roanoke, Debra Little of Roanoke, Cathy Vowell of Wedowee, Shelia Earnest of Roanoke, Wanda Smith of Newell, and Janice Sprayberry of Woodland; and two brothers, Larry Vowell of Maryland and Randy Vowell of Wedowee. Pallbearers will be Tony Brown, Bobby Bolt, Jeremy Holloway, Anthony Bozeman, Jason Vowell, Rodney Waters, and Eddie Akins. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandsons, Chris Morris, Dustin Wade, Jakob Vowell, Caleb Vowell, Joseph Williams, Eli Clark, Luke Fincher, and Seth Fincher, and nephews, Chase Brown, Jared Holloway, John Melton, Derrick Bozeman, and Jamie Vowell. A Wedowee native, Rev. Vowell was born on January 22, 1955, the son of Lommie and Mattie Will Mapp Vowell. He was a member of Mt. Grove Baptist Church and was a beaming operator at Mohawk Industries and a farmer. Rev. Vowell was preceded in death by his parents.
