Obituary of Billy Mitchell

Funeral services for Billy Mitchell, age 80, of Newell will be held on Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at 2:00 PM from Jordan Chapel Congregational Methodist Church with Rev. Ridley Herren officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4:00-8:00 PM on Tuesday, July 1, 2014. Mr. Mitchell will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services beginning on Wednesday. Mr. Mitchell passed away Sunday, June 29, 2014, at Wedowee Hospital. Survivors include his wife, Carrie Lee Mitchell; two sons, Chris and wife Donna Mitchell of Roanoke, and Alan and wife Katrina Mitchell of Eclectic; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Tim Smith, Jeremy McCain, Jeff Mitchell, Ryan Mitchell, Ricky Cavender, and Phillip Cavender. A Wedowee native, Mr. Mitchell was born on February 23, 1934, the son of William Howard and Annie Waugh Mitchell. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and retired as the Assistant Fire Chief with the Anniston Army Depot. Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by his parents.
