Obituary of Mamie Slay Stewart

Funeral services for Mamie Slay Stewart, age 87, of Wedowee, will be held on Thursday, July 10, 2014, at 1:30 PM at Ava United Methodist Church with Rev. Howard Johnson and Rev. Terry Graham officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00-7:00 PM on Wednesday, July 9, 2014. Mrs. Stewart will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services beginning on Thursday, July 10. Mrs. Stewart passed away Monday, July 7, 2014, at Bethany House in Auburn, Alabama. Survivors include: two daughters, Claire Watts (husband, James) of Auburn and Marsha Moorehead (husband, Tommy) of Lineville; one son, David Stewart (wife, Tammy) of Spanish Fort; six grandchildren, Abby Moorehead Kuhn, Tim Watts, Brett Watts, Kevin Watts, Julia Stewart Burnett, and Margaret Stewart; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ethel Purvis of Conyers, GA. A Chambers County native, Mrs. Stewart was born on August 13, 1926, the daughter of Bernard Whatley and Lena Halsey Slay. She was a graduate of Chambers County High School and attended Jacksonville College. She was a Sunday School teacher, Bible study teacher, and served as Sunday School treasurer for over 29 years. Mrs. Stewart had served as president of Wedowee Music Club and Wedowee Garden Club and had held other offices in both clubs. She was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband of 66 years, Robert F (Bobby) Stewart. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Ava United Methodist Building Fund.
