Obituary of William Davenport, Sr.

Funeral services for William “Bill” Davenport, Sr., age 84, of Wedowee will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2015, at 11:00 AM from Benefield Funeral Chapel with Henry Nelson officiating. Burial will follow at Antioch Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00-8:00 PM on Friday, July 31, 2015. Mr. Davenport passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2015, at Golden Living Nursing Home in Oxford. Survivors include: three daughters, Gertrude Johnson (Jerry) of Wedowee, Hattie Houston (Kelly) of Columbus, Ga, and Teresa Sims (Toreze) of Memphis, TN; a stepdaughter, Jeanette Bell of Memphis, TN; three sons, William Davenport, Jr., (Goldie) of Roanoke, Johnny Ray Davenport (Pat) of Columbus, GA, and Jason Davenport (Stacy) of Saks; a stepson, James Stevenson of Columbus, GA; 19 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Cathrine McCoy of Chattanooga, TN, and Jessie Brigham of Springville, OH. A Randolph County native, Mr. Davenport was born on December 4, 1930, the son of Willie and Stella Poole Davenport. He was a member of Weathers Heights Church of Christ, served in the United States Air Force during World War II, and worked in sales at the Farmer’s Co-op. Mr. Davenport was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jannie Davenport; two sons, Lonnie and Sylvester Davenport; one sister; and two brothers. The family is accepting flowers or, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Benefield Funeral Home for Mr. Davenport’s funeral expenses.
