Obituary of Joyce Ann Whitman Powers

Funeral services for Joyce Ann Whitman Powers, age 72, of Roanoke will be held on Sunday, August 9, 2015, at 2:00 PM from Benefield Funeral Chapel with Rev. Bobby Burroughs, Rev. Scottie Patillo, and Rev. Corky Addison officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Baptist Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00-8:00 PM on Saturday, August 8, 2015. Mrs. Powers passed away Thursday, August 6, 2015, at her home surrounded by loving family. Survivors include: two daughters, Sandi Burroughs (husband, Robert) of Opelika and Lori Powers of Wedowee; two sons, Robert Powers (wife, Paige) of Anniston and Ronnie Powers (wife, Ellen) of Roanoke; nine grandchildren, Josh Powers (Kim), Nicholas Powers, Mallory Wells (Reese), Devony Burroughs, Dustin Burroughs, Ashley Burroughs, Lacey Blankenship (Chris), Jessica Hill, and Noah Powers; seven great-grandchildren; and one brother, Larry Edward Whitman of Anniston. Pallbearers will be Brandon Whitman, Bryce Martin, Chris Blankenship, Reese Wells, Mark Hulsey, and Clint Hill. Honorary pallbearers will be Brian Nicholson, Shane Snider, and David Rose. A long-time Randolph County resident, Mrs. Powers was born in Grenada, Mississippi, on July 29, 1943, the daughter of Luie Edward and Willie Mae Pentecost Whitman. She attended Mt Pleasant Baptist Church. Joyce was a devoted wife and mother and loved nothing more than having her family gather in her home. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Franklin Delano Powers; and one sister, Sandra Whitman Downey. The family would like to extend a special thank you for assisting in Joyce’s care to a special sister-in-law, Geri Carter and special caregiver, Kelly Bass.
