Obituary of Vernie Laney Perry

Graveside services for Vernie Laney Perry, age 81, of Roanoke will be held on Thursday, March 17, 2016, at 2 PM Wedowee City Cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00-7:00 PM on Wednesday, March 16, 2016. Mrs. Perry passed away Monday, March 14, 2016, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham. Survivors include: two sons, Michael S. Perry and Thomas H. Perry, both of Lineville; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Dianne Delanuez of Orlando, FL; and two brothers, Jack Laney of Birmingham and David Laney of Madison. Pallbearers will be Zachary George Perry, Thomas Astin Perry, Steve Sedberry, Mark Awbrey, and Ryan Sewell. A Calhoun County native, Mrs. Perry was born on July 15, 1934, the daughter of H.C. Laney and Lillie Baggett Crawford. She was a member of Wedowee First United Methodist Church and was a local historian and past historical society president. She owned and operated several businesses and later in life became a real estate broker. Mrs. Perry was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Ralph Crawford; her husband, George William Perry, Sr.; one son, George William “Bill” Perry, Jr.; and one brother, Colin Laney.
