Obituary of Edythe Spears Bowen

Funeral services for Edythe Spears Bowen, age 84, of Roanoke will be held on Thursday, August 11, 2016, at 2:00 PM at the Potash Church of God with Charley Bolt and Carolyn Hanner officiating. Burial will following in the adjoining cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00-8:00 PM on Wednesday, August 10, 2016. Mrs. Bowen will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services beginning on Thursday. Mrs. Bowen passed away Monday, August 8, 2016, at Wedowee Hospital. Survivors include: four daughters, Angie Bowen of Montgomery, AL, Cheryl Hanner (husband, Steve) of Woodland, AL, Faith Bowen of Roanoke, AL, and Connie Johnson (husband, Jimmy) of Carrollton, GA; three sons, Larry Bowen (wife, Debra) of Woodland, AL, Dwyatt Bowen of Alexis, NC, and Darrell Bowen of Roanoke, AL; 17 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; one sister, Melba Smallwood of LaGrange, GA; and two brothers, Flavis Spears of Louisville, KY, and Ralph Spears of Summerville, GA. A Randolph County native, Mrs. Bowen was born on March 11, 1932, the daughter of Winford and Bonnie Mae Shaw Spears. She was a member of Potash Church of God and was retired from the Randolph County Board of Education where she worked in the lunchroom at Woodland High School. Mrs. Bowen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Andy Bowen; one son, Garry Bowen; and two brothers, Billy Spears and Gene Spears.
