Obituary of Chester Wortham

Funeral services for Chester Wortham, age 81, of Newell will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2019, at 2:00 PM at Iduma Congregational Methodist Church with Rev. Billy East and Rev. Jonathan Hannah officiating.  Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00-8:00 PM on Wednesday, September 11, 2019.  Mr. Wortham will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services beginning on Thursday.

Mr. Wortham passed away Monday, September 9, 2019, at UAB Hospital in Birmingham.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Wortham of Newell; two daughters, Lacey Blankenship (husband, Chris) of Newell and Jessica Leach (husband, Chris) of Newell; two sons, Scott Wortham and Michael Wortham, both of Newell; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Annie Lois Shears of Oxford and Trudy Barron of Roswell, GA.

Pallbearers will be Glenn Shiflett, Lamar Landreth, Greg Daniel, Eugene Wortham, Wayne Wortham, and Eddie Creed.

A Wedowee native, Mr. Wortham was born on May 15, 1938, the son of John and Annie Thrasher Wortham.  He was a member of Iduma Congregational Methodist Church and was the owner of Wortham Construction.  Mr. Wortham was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
