Obituary of Alma Mitchell Kirby
Funeral services for Alma Mitchell Kirby, age 87, of Oxford will be held on Monday, December 14, 2020, at 2 PM CST at Benefield Funeral Chapel with Bro. Stoney Halsey and Bro. Mike Nobbley officiating. Burial will follow at White’s Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Wedowee from 5:00-7:00 PM CST on Sunday, December 13, 2020.
Mrs. Kirby passed away Friday, December 11, 2020, at her home surrounded by family and friends.
Survivors include her husband, William “Bill” Eugene Kirby, AKA Billy Gene, of Oxford; three sisters, Carolyn M. Rollins (Arnold) of Woodland, Louise M. Jackson (Gene) of Newnan, GA, and Colley M. Haynes (Douglas) of Newell; one brother, D. C. “Pete” Mitchell of Roanoke; sister-in-law, JoAnn Mitchell of LaGrange; several nieces and nephews; and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews. She had one very special great-niece, Madison Rae Haynes and one very special great-nephew, Dawson Kirby Haynes. Mrs. Kirby loved those kids as if they were her very own. They called her Nanna and she was their third grandparent. Those kids stayed in her home a couple days each week until they became school age. They visited her a lot of times during her sickness.
Pallbearers will be Gene Jackson, Alan Mitchell, Anthony Rollins, Ray Jackson, Chuck Holloway, and Bobby Crabtree.
A Woodland native, Mrs. Kirby was born on April 1, 1933, the oldest child of David and Gertrude Brown Mitchell. She was a member of White’s Chapel Methodist Church where she had served on many committees and had a very long and rewarding career in the sewing industry. Mrs. Kirby was an excellent seamstress and a very good cook. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Charlie and Cecil Mitchell.
Per the family’s request, anyone attending the visitation and/or funeral service is asked to wear a mask at all times and practice social distancing.
