Obituary of Joe Thompson

Mr. Joe Steverson Thompson, age 82, of Bowdon, GA, passed away on Wednesday, September 27, 2023. 

He was born on January 19, 1941.

He was the son of Shellie and Verna Thompson.  He served in the Vietnam War from 1966-1968.  He was employed by Lamar Manufacturing, James Watson Ford Dealership as a mechanic, and later retired from Trintex in Bowdon as a machinist.

He was a member of Providence Baptist Church in Woodland, Alabama, where he served as a Deacon for over 30 years.  He enjoyed playing his guitar, sitting on the porch, watching Alabama football and the Atlanta Braves.

Survivors include his loving wife of almost 60 years, Barbara Saxon Thompson; son, Scott Thompson; daughter Staci (Richard) Gillespie; granddaughters, Haley and Hannah Thompson, Katelyn and Abbie Gillespie.  Brothers include Maxie Thompson and Sammy Thompson. Sisters include Jean Haynes, Shirley McManus, and Carol Gilreath.

Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Loyce Thompson and sisters, Betty Jameson and Grace Stone.

Visitation will be at Benefield Funeral Home, 17624 US 431, Wedowee, AL 36278 on Thursday, September 28^th from 5:00-7:00 PM AL time.  Mr. Thompson will lie in state at the church from 12:00-1:00 PM AL time before services begin on Friday.

Funeral services will be at Providence Baptist Church, 235 County Road 103, Woodland, AL, on Friday, September 29^th at 1:00 PM AL time.  Rev. Terry Eason and Rev. Tony Morris will officiate.

Serving as pallbearers are Brandon Teate, Daryl Thompson, Randy Green, Mark McManus, Johnny Harper, and Jack Shelton.
