During one of the last conversations I had with my Uncle Kenneth, I was telling him how a friend of mine says that you can be anywhere in my house and there is a tape measure within five feet, and it's pretty true, and Uncle Kenneth looks at me with a laugh and says, "There's probably eleven tape measurers in my truck right now." One might wonder how two hands could use eleven tape measures, but I'm sure he knew a way.
A few days before Kenneth passed, Kristi was telling me that her daddy wanted her to sing a certain song for him, (Daddy's Hands by Holly Dunn), and it got me to thinking…
A person's hands can sometimes tell quite a story. And I don't mean by all the gestures they might make (if you know me, you know I am notorious for talking with my hands), but by how their hands look. I thought of this as I sat by my uncle, my favorite uncle, and held his hand in mine. His hands, worn and weathered from many years of use, yet still strong. Hands that never hesitated to help another. Hands of an artist that could draw and design practically anything. Hands that did woodworking for years and years, and that over 30 years ago made hope chests for me and my sister. It is my most treasured piece of furniture. Hands that have made the ornaments for our family Christmases, our "Christmas Down Home", for close to 20 years now. An ornament for every single person in our rather large family, and my aunts would paint them and add the name and year. Ornaments that he made sure to get done early this year while he was still feeling well. Hands that cooked a huge breakfast on Christmas morning to share with those that could be there. Hands that made well known desserts such as the delicious milk chocolate bar cake and mandarin orange cake made for Adam and Anna's wedding, and a strawberry cake made at the special request of his great-nephew Tanner, all from absolute scratch. Hands that taught his nieces and nephews how to make fried pies, just like his mama, our mawmaw, used to make. Hands that have pitched many a game of horseshoes with his brothers and sisters and cousins. Hands that could bait a fishing hook, and Stephanie will tell you he was ever so proud of the "big" fish he caught one day. Hands that lifted me, his favorite niece, up as a little girl so I could go with him in his big truck to feed the cows. Hands that helped Jason to build his cabin. And, with Jason working along with him, hands that helped Adam and Anna as they worked on their home, put down flooring for Jessica, and worked on many a job and project for Mrs. Alyce Benefield. Hands that helped his daddy work on their farm growing up. Hands that would help to lift his mama into her wheelchair later in life. Hands that held those of his wife, my aunt Peggy, during their 40 years of marriage. Hands that lovingly cradled his daughter Kristi; hands that would tuck her into bed, and wipe away her tears. Hands that were sure to give a firm handshake or a hearty pat on the back, while saying, "I'm glad you got to see me!" Kenneth leaves us with wonderful memories, great and funny stories, and a lasting legacy of the things he crafted and built with his hands, but more than that, he leaves the love of his heart in all that he did.

Life is just too short, no matter the years, leaving only memories. May the countless, fine memories of your beloved husband/father, Mr. Wortham, forever warm your hearts and bring smiles to your faces, even behind tears shed. May you find comfort in knowing that death was never God’s plan, (Gen.1:28; Rom.5:12) and one day death will be no more, as (Rev.21:4) loved ones will be resurrected (Acts 24:15) with the hope of life forever in paradise, on earth, as (Ps.37:11,29) God intended. Cherish the hope.
