Obituary of Myrtle Yvonne Prince Holmes

Please share a memory of Myrtle to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Proverbs 14:1 – Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.

Myrtle Yvonne Prince Holmes, 89, of Wedowee finished her course and received her crown of righteousness on Friday, April 26, 2024.  A loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend who worked diligently, served others tirelessly, and lived life gracefully, Yvonne, or “Granny” or “Myrt” as she was known to many, was a wonderful example of the Proverbs 31 woman.  Her life was a beautiful testament to how a Christian woman should live and, while she will be sorely missed by her friends and family, she is now peacefully rejoicing in the presence of the Almighty and enjoying her reward.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, April 28, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Benefield Funeral Chapel.  Burial will follow at Wedowee City Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00-8:00 PM on Saturday, April 27, 2024.

Survivors include: three daughters, Teresa Chandler (Dana) and Terri Frederick (Alex), both of Wedowee, and Tammy Frederick (Claude) of Auburn; one son, Tommy Holmes (Shondae Brown) of Wedowee; four grandchildren, Breanna Yarbrough (James), Jacob Frederick, Autumn Frederick, and Caleb Frederick; two great-grandchildren, Tucker Yarbrough and Cooper Yarbrough; three sisters, Helen Underwood (Jim) of Huntsville, AL, MaryAnn Siggers (Jimmy) of Valley, AL, and Lois Wallace (Thomas) of Cusseta, AL; one brother, Albert Prince of Cusseta; one sister-in-law, Wilda Harris of Grady, AL; and many nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Claude Frederick, Jacob Frederick, Caleb Frederick, James Yarbrough, Wayne Joyner, and Ethan Fowler.

Yvonne was born on July 21, 1934, a native of Cusseta, AL. One of nine children herself and having four children of her own, family was always an integral part of her life.  She met and married her beloved husband, Harold Holmes, in 1957 and they were married for 50 years.  Yvonne lived the majority of her life in Wedowee, during which time she helped her husband and brother-in-law run Kirby’s Service Station and then later delivered mail for the US Postal Service.  Upon her retirement, it was with great joy that she took care of her grandchildren.  A member of West Broad Street Church of Christ and Oak Grove Church of Christ, Yvonne was a beloved sister in Christ to all with whom she worshipped.  Her home, the heart of her family, was always open to friends and family alike and was the location of many birthday parties, baby and wedding showers, family dinners, and other special memories.  Indeed, just as Proverbs 14:1 suggests, she was a wise woman who built her house with love and care.

Yvonne is preceded in death by her father, Robert Henry Prince; mother, Mary Godfrey Prince; husband, Joseph Harold Holmes; one sister; two brothers; six sisters-in-law; and four brothers-in-law.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the nurses and aides of Compassus and Cindy Wilkins and Rosa Lee Brassell for their kind and compassionate care during her final months.

Floral memorials will be accepted, as will donations to St. Jude’s Research Hospital (her favorite charity) at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, and Compassus at 4455 US Highway 431, Roanoke, AL 36274, in her memory.
