Obituary of Billy Joe Cofield

Funeral services for Billy Joe Cofield, age 92, of Newell will be held on Sunday, June 9, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Union Baptist Church with Rev. Ed Halsey officiating.  Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4:00-7:00 PM on Saturday, June 8, 2024.  Mr. Cofield will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services beginning on Sunday.

Mr. Cofield passed away on Friday, June 7, 2024, at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, GA.

Survivors include: one daughter, Vickie Candler (Buddy) of Newell; one grandson, Dustin Candler of Wedowee; and one sister, Barbara Barker of Anniston. 

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Cofield, Chris Hill, Mark Yeager, Ed Barrett, Daniel Andrews, and Travis Owen.  Honorary pallbearers will be Rodney Brown, Keith Gentry, and Ronnie Butler.

A Randolph County native, Mr. Cofield was born on May 23, 1932, the son of Roy Earnest and Dora Loveless Cofield.  He was a member of Union Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon, being ordained on August 22, 1993.  Mr. Cofield was a United States Army veteran of the Korean conflict and worked as a manufacturing engineer with General Motors before retiring.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gaynell Cofield; one daughter, Myra Yarian; and five brothers and three sisters.

Memorials may be floral or donations may be made to the Union Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
