Funeral services for Merl Brown, age 78, of Wedowee, will be held on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Wedowee First United Methodist Church Chapel with Bro. Ken Corson officiating.  Burial will follow at Ava Methodist Church Cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.


The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00-7:00 PM on Tuesday, November 26. Mr. Brown will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services beginning on Wednesday.


Mr. Brown passed away on Friday, November 22, 2024, at St. Vincents Medical Center in Birmingham.


Survivors include: his wife, Kathy Messer Brown; three daughters, Mandy (Willard) Ford, Wendi (Chad) Green and Abbie (Neal) Daniel; four grandchildren, Gracie Anna Green, James Durham Daniel, Henry Worth Daniel and Charlie Louis Daniel; three siblings, Jeri Gore, Johnny (Sue) Brown and Margaret (Don) Lauderdale; and in-laws, Kim (Rudd) Cummings, Tommy (Laura) Messer, and Jared Kirby. 


Pallbearers will be Bobby Crenshaw, Ronnie Hanson, Tommy Herron, Michael Rampy, Jeff Stewart, MD, and Dan Strain.


A Randolph County native, Mr. Brown was born on November 12, 1946, the son of Dolphus and Tyvola Dye Brown. He was a member of Wedowee First United Methodist Church. Mr. Brown was a veteran of the United States Army where he honorably served his country in the 82nd Airborne division during the Vietnam Conflict. He later worked as a self-employed carpenter. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jim Brown.
