Obituary Notice

Funeral services for Thomas Ira Shafer age 77 of Newell will be held Tuesday April 22, 2013 at 11:00 AM from Harmony Congregational Methodist Church with Rev. David Weaver officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.

Mr. Shafer passed away Saturday April 20, 2013 at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center.

Survivor include one daughter Alecia Shafer Fordham of Ranburne; four sons Steve Shafer of Heflin, Mike Shafer of Lakeland, Fl., Richard Shafer of Newell and James Shafer of Tallapoosa, Ga. Two sisters Doris Weaver of Windsor, N.Y.and Jan Freeman of Binghamton, N.Y; Two brothers Donald Shafer of Greene, N.Y. and Paul Shafer of Laurens S.C; Eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Joshua Smith, Roman Richardson, Randy Cofield, Randy Camp, Shay Wiggins and John Paul Allen.

Mr. Shafer was born November 24, 1935 the son of Floyd and Ethel Hurlbut Shafer. He was self-employed in the trucking industry and of the Christian faith. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the United States Army. He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson Steven Allan Shafer and one brother Roger Shafer.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home- Wedowee on Monday April 22, 2013 from 5 till 8 PM.
