Jerry was one of the good guys. There will be many memories of him during our growing up years. May he rest in peace. My condolences to all of his family. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I was most saddened to hear of Jerry's passing this morning when my sister, Julie Thompson sent me the information.
Jerry and I met when I entered the third grade at Wedowee Grammar School, and we were lifelong friends. One of the most sincere, most decent and honest people I've ever know in the course of my life. Everything about him was genuine, from his smile, the way he talked, his love of his family, the respect he showed to his teachers, his coaches and really, to everyone.
There was never, ever a mean word I ever heard him utter. His heart was pure, his speech was never interspersed with ugly or profane words. I can truly say I never knew anyone who did not like Jerry.
Jerry wore his faith like a shield, and his faith shown like a light. I can remember in class one day, and to which I will never forget, Coach Brazeal was teaching science, and asked the question to the class what the body was made of, to which Jerry answered from the heart, "it's made of Dirt Coach!". Jerry answered this question absolutely straight from the heart, for he was taught that God formed us from the Clay... That was pure Jerry Wortham. Honest to a fault, and solid in his belief. Fully immersed in what his Mother Father had taught him, and what the Holy Bible said.
He called me one day out of the blue. Same voice. Same wonderful heart with words of adoration and love for his family and friends... His voice was like two arms that wrapped around me tightly, even in a voice, that spoke of the wonderful human he was. Time had sent me back all those years... How fortunate am I!
While death is esoteric in nature, yet the simplicity of the act within itself can only be realized by thinking with somewhat of an abstract paradigm, and that from which we were formed, yet we return. Jerry was truly right all those years ago, even if an a metaphorical sense.
I searched in my mind today of something that would be fitting to say of Jerry's life, and I remembered a few lines from an old Hymnal, written by Howard A. Arnold many years ago, and although simple in nature and tone, it fits my friend well:
I would be True, for there are those who Trust me;
I would be Pure, for there are those who care;
I would be Strong for there is much to suffer;
I would be Brave, for there is much to Dare...
Rest well my old friend...
